9.03.08 The new 90210
Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008THE NEW 90210—The most anticipated TV show on the 2008 fall schedule premiered last night on the CW. The ratings…good…for the CW. 4.9 Million viewers which is exactly was the CW needs to hold on. Now the question is…can they keep those numbers?…hhhmmmm….
I watched it for two reasons. One, 90210 is a permanent tattoo on my generation. I watched out of curiosity. How can they top the infamous old zip code? Can they pull it off? Could it be BETTER? This is what was going through my head as I pressed play on my DVR and my first thought was that I recorded THE HILLS on MTV instead. eeeek.
It does not surprise me that they are using shows like The Hills to bounce ideas off. I still scratch my head on that show but that is what the kids are watching. Heck, that is what adults are watching as well. I have several friends that are “addicted to the Hills”….I don’t get it.
Moving on, I thought they pulled it off. Was it the masterpiece you would have hoped it to be…NAH…but it wasn’t a train wreck either.
I think they did a very good job of grabbing both generations quickly. Generations meaning…the “old 90210 fans” and the “new 90210 fans.”
The plot moved quickly to pave the way for some juicy “soap opera” future drama. Even with the adults. The men in the show are very desirable and the woman are like-able.
For the young one’s, the lead character (I am not up to date on their names yet) reminds me of Hannah Montana. She is too like-able. The boys are also “dreamy” to keep your daughter’s attention. After episode one, I am already routing for two of the characters to fall in love!
Overall, I like all the characters and I think that is important to create in a TV pilot.
I will be upset if Kelly and Brenda disappear soon. ( I am convinced they are here just for a ratings boost.) I like the roles they play. Although a Donna (Tori spelling) guest appearance would be good…and of course Luke Perry. (I guess I just miss them all) ggggrrrrr.
To wrap up, it wasn’t bad. HOWEVER…I think all the girls on the show are TOO SKINNY. Just keep in mind the camera adds 10 pounds! I think they need to order special 30 pound one’s!
This show was an ICON and had heavy influence on teenage boys and girls and if this show has an iconic influence on the new generation, I am nervous. Don’t get me wrong, I know that this overly skinny look has been all over TV for many years now but for some reason it just triggered me last night. I was thinking back to Donna, Kelly, and Brenda and none of those girls were sickly thin. Why can’t we go back to those days? It really makes me sad that beautiful teenage girls are looking up to these barbie dolls on TV and thinking that is what you ‘have’ to look like.
The weight of the girls and the naughty behavior that was in the first 5 minutes of the show turned me off and my hopes for a tasteful 2 hours went south fast but I recovered quicker than I thought.
Overall, they hooked me to return for week two.
What did you think? Are you hooked? If you didn’t watch, did your child? Did it live up to the old 90210? Any thoughts are welcome…just click ADD COMMENT.
I forget just how much I love Premiere week (month really)
